‘Frailty’ is the new album by Andrew Lang, a composer and musician from Adelaide, Australia. Frailty represents a new direction for Andrew, departing from his piano-centric neoclassical ambient compositional approach, and instead turning to electric guitars, effects pedals, synths, field recordings and tape machines. The result is a collection of dreamy, blissed-out dronescapes, which maintain the delicate, emotional sensibilities of his past music, while embracing thick, sustained tones and washes of noise.

The track ‘Years & Years’ features a guest saxophone performance by Derek Pascoe, which Andrew ran through a chain of effects to transform and blend into a ringing, reverberating fog of sound.

Andrew recorded the bulk of Frailty between 2020 and 2022, a time of emotional upheaval for him, due in part to the once-in-a-generation events of that period. This range of emotions, from nostalgia and loss to optimism and joy, is etched into the compositions that make up Frailty.

REVIEWS

Frailty is the new album by Andrew Lang, a composer and musician from Adelaide, Australia. This release represents a new direction for Andrew, as he moves away from his piano-centered neoclassical ambient approach and instead turns to electric guitars, effects pedals, synthesizers, field recordings and tape machines. The whole thing sounds still composed, the harmonic developments are reminiscent of his older recordings, but the sound is more washed out and noisy.

New from Perceptual Tapes comes the latest release from Australian ambient artist Andrew Lang. “Frailty” is a magnificently spell-binding nine-song release chock full of warm and spacious pads laying the foundation for delicate field recordings and ornate sounds, and glazed over with a wash of subdued noise and textures. There’s a sense of restful acceptance and equanimity as you press play and give in to the 38-minute vast expanse that Lang has created. It reminds me of warm summer nights, standing under a canopy of light rain — washing away all of the burdens and anxiety I carried throughout the day, reminding me to let go and give into the ever-evolving cosmic flow of life. "Frailty" by Andrew Lang is available now on most streaming music services, as well as on limited edition cassettes, and at  https://perceptualtapes.bandcamp.com.
